One of the things I endeavoured to do before I was not able to was to visit the state of North Carolina in the United States and have me some adventure. As a Londoner I wanted to see the world, so two after I had my laser hair removal London done I was on my way. I did not realize that the journey by plane would be so long but once we touched down I was good to go.

America’s Most Wanted

America’s Most Wanted

If you asked the average tourist boarding a transatlantic flight where in the USA they were most eager to see, you’d receive a variety of answers. From the bright lights of New York and Vegas to the natural wonders of coasts, mountains and deserts, America offers a perhaps unparalleled selection of destinations. But which cities are the leading lights? The results might surprise you.

At the very top, it’s admittedly not a shock to see Orlando crowned America’s most visited destination. The shadow of Mickey Mouse is cast across the list, with otherwise obscure Californian city Anaheim coming in 4th thanks to the Disneyland park in its vicinity.

In tenth place, San Diego is the only other Californian city to feature, over its more famous cousins, LA and San Francisco. It features in the lower reaches with Atlanta and Houston, all as a result of a thriving business and leisure convention industry.

The latter two are also boosted by their status as regional centres, alongside Chicago, which somewhat surprisingly comes in third, above both Vegas and Miami. It shows the power of regional tourism in this vast nation.

New York in second and Philadelphia further down the list also show that America is in possession of historic sites that pull in international tourists. From theme parks to conventions, local destinations and global hot spots, America’s ten most visited show the diversity of attractions that the country has to offer. It seems whichever corner of the States you’re heading to, there’s something worth seeing.

This really adds-up to the unique charisma San Francisco has. The oldest building is the “St Francis of Assisi” church, which was built in 1776 and which actually gives San Francisco its name. The many public parks and gardens that San Francisco has offer a great opportunity to engage in different outdoor activities. The biggest park is the Golden Gate Park, where you can easily spend the whole day. The local people are friendly and usually love to talk with the tourists.

Jus Soli

Jus Soli

I can’t stop thinking about it really. I was at the pub talking to my friend about how to access internet worldwide and we started talking about citizenship. There are two models, philosophical ideas about how citizenship occurs: blood and soil. Jus soli: right of soil says that a person who is born in a country is a citizen of that country. This is the modern idea the idea of the republic, and France whole heartedly embraces it. The new world countries, historically have believed in this type of citizenship, the old world countries tend towards Jus sanguinis: right of blood. This is the idea that citizenship and belonging to a nation is passed through the blood. There is a complex web of racism and nationalism that is embedded in notions of citizenship. In the United States, the right of citizenship was completely by soil until the creeping racism of the late twentieth century. In an attempt to limit the rights of Mexican migrants primarily, jus soli in the United States has faced progressive limitations. On a less academic note, people used to talk about ’anchor babies’. Migrant families who had children born in the United States used to be entitled to certain rights by way of the child. There has been restrictions placed on these rights which result in things happening like parents of United States citizens being deported as illegal immigrants and those children then facing either deportation or separation from their parents. We all need to ask ourselves some difficult questions about where this type of policy is heading before it is too late.

Vegas: the biggest adventure of them all!

Vegas: the biggest adventure of them all!

Forget the unearthly look of the Grand Canyon, the most alien landscape to be found on the North American continent is in Las Vegas, Nevada!

Whether you want to ride on a roller coaster around the skyscrapers of New York, New York, sip cocktails on the 54th floor of the Rio hotel or watch Big Elvis sing his tunes at Bill’s there’s nothing regular about a vacation in the original Sin City.

Except it’s not really that sinful any more. If you’re looking for the Las Vegas from all the mobster movies, then you’ll probably be disappointed. There’s still plenty of sleaze if you want to go digging around for it, though I wouldn’t recommend walking through the “bail bonds” area of town after dark. And the CSI series has something right – there are a lot of murders away from the tourist areas.

Last time I was in Vegas we had a great time playing the tables and partaking of the free drinks, and I was even persuaded to go into a strippers for the first and only time in my life! I was working in the basis that not only does what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas, but this was the only city I’d been in the where the strippers was between a heating oil suppliers and a sweet shop. I don’t know; it somehow made it more acceptable…

It wasn’t all the sleazy really – or sexy for that matter. But it was the biggest adrenaline rush I’d had for a while. I don’t know who I thought was going to see me going in to the “Girls of Glitter Gulch” but I found myself checking the street furtively for anybody I knee before taking the plunge. Anyway, there are some places where normal behaviour just goes out of the window – and Vegas is definitely one of them!

The Grand Canyon – Mind-blowing Adventure

America truly is an astounding country. You could live a hundred lifetimes and still not live long enough to enjoy everything it has to offer.

We’d suggest starting at the Grand Canyon – the epitome of awesome terrain which has both dazzled and humbled travellers for generations. It’s a phrase which is bandied around a lot, but there are seriously no words than can aptly describe the sheer majesty of the Canyon.

It is one of the country’s first National Parks, and arguably the best. At it’s deepest the sheer cliff walls stand over a mile high, and continue for nearly three hundred miles as the Colorado river meanders through – and while it is the river which ultimately formed the spectacle we enjoy today, the exact processes which took place to form the Canyon as well as its age are not fully understood even with our modern understanding of geology. It is also debated as to when the inhabiting Ancient Pueblo Peoples first came to the area, but our best guesses suggest that their history is indeed ancient. Europeans and American trappers followed soon after, and it was finally designated as a National Park in 1919.

It’s a great place to take the family for camping and walking trips (though do pay attention to any safety notices you’ll see dotted around the park). The kids will learn a lot, and when you’re in your car shipping back home you’ll be able to look back on your time there and know that the memories will stay with you for a long time to come.

Go Hiking Along The Frog Pond Trail Georgia

Go Hiking Along The Frog Pond Trail Georgia

Yeah I know what you want t do..get out there in that great big American and have an adventure. Maybe you want to do it in a trailer and if you do make sure you get some trailer insurance. Now if you have not decided where you want to go then give the Frog pond Trail in Helen Georgia a visit.

This trail can be found in Unicoi State Park and is a great for hiking and enjoying nature, and you can even take your kids along for the experience.

The trail itself is not very challenging for an extreme hiker but for a family it is great. It is a moderate in terms of impact and short. What you will experience will be a scenic route in the mountains and through the forest. You even go past the breathtaking pond before you head back to the Unicoi Lodge visitors centre.

The hike itself starts out fairly easy and is slightly downhill in the beginning as you go down some steps that have been fashion from railroad ties and once you reach the end of the steps you will find that the trail starts levelling out and becomes much easier to navigate as the grade gets gentler.

From the start of the trail there are a number of interpretive markers that litter the route and you can use them to teach your kids about wildlife. These markers have information and pictures of the many variant of plants, trees, and wildlife you see on the trail.

Early into the trail hikers will come upon a viewing field where you will see wildlife, this field runs alongside a small natural pond. You will see and hear frog and other critter scurrying about as you approach the pond. There are a number of benches along the trail where you can sit and have lunch or if you want you can lay out a blanket and have it of the grass.

Although the trail is just under a half a mile it is easy and fun. If you want to experience a long trail then there are more throughout the park.
